UPDATE: Ark. treasurer accused of taking cash from broker

Posted:

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - Arkansas Treasurer Martha Shoffner made her first appearance in federal court Monday after being arrested on federal extortion charges over the weekend.

FBI Special Agent Richard Mclain said in court documents obtained by Channel 7 News that a broker donated $2,000 to Shoffner for a campaign event and sponsored her watch party for $4,700. Shoffner allegedly favored that broker for business because of these and other contributions.

The same broker reportedly told the FBI he/she paid $1,000 a month starting in 2009 or 2010 for Shoffner to be able to rent an apartment in Little Rock so she wouldn't have to commute back and forth between her home in Newport on a daily basis. They said they paid Shoffner by putting cash in a pie box with the pie still in it in order to conceal the delivery.

Shoffner allegedly asked for this broker to also buy property for her in Little Rock but they refused.

Shoffner was criticized in a legislative audit last year for bond sales that blocked the state from earning more than $400,000.

Shoffner was booked into the Pulaski County Jail, which the U.S. Marshals Service uses for holding federal detainees.
