Garland County man convicted of negligent homicide

Posted:

HOT SPRINGS (AP) - A man who prosecutors say was intoxicated when he fatally struck a pedestrian has been found guilty of misdemeanor negligent homicide by a jury in Garland County.

The verdict came in late Thursday after a 2-day trial over the death of 75-year-old James Hipkins.

The Sentinel-Record reports that 48-year-old Danny Roy "Heavy" Jones struck Hipkins on Feb. 22, 2012, on Park Avenue in Hot Springs near Hipkins' home.

Hipkins died the next day at a hospital.

Prosecutor Steve Oliver noted that 90% of victims would have survived the blow from Jones' car, but Hipkins' age and health worked against his chances for survival. Oliver said another mitigating factor was that Jones remained at the scene.

Jurors sentenced Jones to 60 days of community service for the misdemeanor conviction.
