COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - First lady Michelle Obama has spoken passionately about the importance of education to the African-American community in a commencement address to more than 600 graduates of Bowie State University.

The first lady spoke Friday about the university's founding in 1865 to train black teachers and the "hunger" its first students felt to be educated. She said the graduating students were carrying on that legacy but lamented the lack of such desire in parts of the black community.

Obama cited statistics that show college graduates live longer and earn more money, and she said too many African-Americans are dropping out of high school.

The first lady has spoken at several historically black colleges and universities since President Barack Obama was sworn in as the nation's first black president.
