Wildlife Agents Investigating Bald Eagle Found Dead

Posted: Updated:

Wildlife authorities are investigating the death of a bald eagle found dead in Sequoyah County back in March near a motel.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation are asking the public for more information regarding the death and mutilation of a bald eagle in Sallisaw.

According to the release from the department, special agents and game wardens were informed of the eagle's carcass abandoned on the sidewalk of the Motel 6 in Sallisaw. After initial forensic evaluation, agents revealed the talons had been removed along with the tail feathers and several primary wing feathers.

Now authorities are offering up to $2,500 for information which leads to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death and mutilation of the eagle.

"Bald Eagles are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the Federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and Oklahoma Wildlife Statute," the release detailed. "Under these laws, a person may not kill, harass, disturb or otherwise harm bald eagles."

Anyone with information concerning the death of the bald eagle is asked to contact U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement at 405 715-0617 or Operation Game Thief at 1 800-522-8039 .
