For millions of Americans, social security is the paycheck they live on every month.
One Saline County woman is missing hers.
All we know is Verna Potts' $724.00 check didn't make it to her account this month.
And we know it is not the first time this has happened to a social security recipient.
The 83 year-old Potts has a loving daughter who lives next door and watches over her finances.
"I didn't know it was missing until my daughter looked at my statement and she said it hadn't been deposited," says Potts. "And of course I called the bank and it still hadn't and she called the bank and it still hadn't. It still hadn't (laughs)."
"They didn't go into her account and pull money out," explains daughter Frankie Rivers. "That's what the Social Security office lady told me. She said that basically they re-routed her money."
Two weeks ago the Office of Inspector General issued a fraud advisory...warning people to beware of identity thieves who have been redirecting social security benefits.
The thieves use a recipient's personal information to open up a new account. Money is redirected to the new account...which is controlled by the thief.
The Social Security Administration is working to make this process even more protected.
In the meantime, Verna is still waiting for her May payment...and worried about her June payment.
"Are you concerned about that one?"
"Yeah, I kinda am," says Potts. "Whether I'll get it or not."
"She doesn't have a lot of money," says Rivers. "But what she's got she really needs."
"I just hope nobody else goes through this," says Potts.
Rivers says the Little Rock Social Security Office has assured her that her mom's money for may will be deposited into her bank account tomorrow.
If you are the victim of identity theft you should call the FTC at 1-877-IDTHEFT.
