Bentonville college votes to opt out of gun law

Posted: Updated:

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Northwest Arkansas Community College is the latest institution to opt out of a state law that allows faculty and staff to carry concealed guns on campus.

College spokesman Chris Holtman tells Fayetteville television station KHOG ( ) that the school's board of trustees voted 5-1 on Monday to opt out of the law, which was passed this year by the Legislature.

East Arkansas Community College in Forrest City, the University of Central Arkansas and Henderson State University have also opted out of the law. The legislation allows faculty and staff with concealed carry permits to carry the weapons on campus unless the school votes to opt out.

Arkansas State University and the University of Arkansas are scheduled to consider the issue at meetings later this month.
