Jenks Shooting: Teen Accused Nears Hearing in Case

Posted: Updated:

A preliminary hearing is approaching for a Jenks teen accused of first-degree murder after a burglary incident back in December.

Joshua Scott Mooney, 15, faces charges of first-degree murder and second-degree burglary. Prosecutors have alleged he shot 47-year-old Mary Escue in the head when she surprised him during a burglary at her parents' house in Jenks.

According to KTUL's community newspaper partner The Jenks Journal, the hearing will likely address several motions filed earlier this year, including one to move the case to juvenile court and another ordering a mental health evaluation.

Mooney is set to appear in court next week for his preliminary hearing.

"The DA's office has charged him as an adult and it is the DA's intent to try him as an adult," said spokesperson Susan Witt.

Investigators said Escue had come back to her relatives house where Mooney was hiding. Mooney told investigators he forced Escue down and shot her in the head.

Mooney appeared in court March 13 for a previous hearing where prosecutors sought to prove cause for a trial. Judge Cliff Smith heard from six witnesses, including family members who recounted finding Escue's body the night of Dec .16.

Mooney is being held in the Tulsa County Jail.
