Muskogee Butterfly House Shares Nature's Beauty

Posted: Updated:

The first ever butterfly house in Muskogee opened Saturday morning.

It's part of their Papilion where they have flower gardens, garden artwork, and of course 320 butterflies. The project took about six years to complete and many hours of raising money to be able to get the butterflies from Florida.

Some of the smallest visitors on Saturday understand the importance of just admiring the butterflies, and that's why one grandmother wanted to bring her 2-year-old granddaughter Kaiden to the grand opening.

"That was the deal behind bringing her for the first time for the ribbon cutting and the balloon release, is that she can come here years from now, and it will still be here," Terrie Giesler.

Dozens of families got to see all the painted ladies. You are asked to watch where you step and to not touch their wings, but they will land anywhere they want. This area is designed for school groups to come and learn about nature.

"We actually have a theater inside that we will show a 3-D movie of the life cycle of the butterfly," says the Director of Muskogee Parks and Recreation, Mark Wilkerson.

Giesler is already teaching Kaiden that the butterflies are fragile and you have to be careful near them.

The butterflies will be changing from now until September when they will close the doors for winter.

It's open seven days a week from 11 a.m. till 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. till 6 p.m. on Sunday.

On Mother's Day, moms get in for free!
