(KATV) A Pine Bluff man is being charged with the death of his newborn baby. Police and an ambulance were called to 10 Richard Court for an unresponsive baby.

The 9 week old child reportedly died before the ambulance made it to the hospital.

The call went in to police Thursday morning. When they arrived, a dog was in the house and animal services was called in. As they were walking the dog out of the home, it took off running with the pole around its neck. It was quickly re-captured.

The father told police when he woke up and checked on the baby that the dog was on the child. He says the dog smothered the baby. When police arrived they say the infant was pale.

On the way to the hospital, paramedics worked to try and get the baby's vital signs up, but Detective Terry Hopson says the child may have already been dead.

Upon further investigation, 22-year old, Ivory Jones was arrested on the charge of first degree murder. Detective Hopson says, "He lived at the house and the information we have now is he is the child's biological father."

Detective Hopson with the Pine Bluff Police Department says the infants mother was home when they arrived. She reportedly came home from work at about 6:30 a.m., found the baby unresponsive and called 911.

Details about how the baby died have not been released. It is an on going investigation. Channel Seven will release more information as it becomes available.
