Stamp Out Hunger food drive this Saturday

Posted: Updated:

Make sure to leave food beside your mailbox Saturday, for the 20th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

Letter carriers will fan out across Arkansas and the nation to pick up donated food on doorsteps and beside mailboxes as they deliver the mail.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, which is held on the second Saturday in May, is the nation's largest single-day food drive. In its 20-year history the drive has been responsible for collecting more than one billion pounds of food for hungry Americas.

In Little Rock and North Little Rock, in an effort led by letter carriers David Mason and Dwayne Ward, thousands of pounds of food will be delivered to the Arkansas Foodbank at 4301 West 65th Street, where dozens of volunteers will sort and box it for distribution to local food pantries and other hunger-relief agencies.

AARP is providing  729,000 grocery bags to be distributed throughout Arkansas to aid the drive. The AARP encourages everyone to fill those bags with non-perishable food and leave it next to their mailbox for pickup by letter carriers the day of the drive. Heart of Arkansas United Way has also provided support for the drive, sponsoring billboards and offering its offices as headquarters for the local drive planning committee.
