Posted: Updated:

GREENWOOD, Ark. (AP) - Authorities in Sebastian County say a man holding his mother at knifepoint was shot and wounded by a deputy.

Sebastian County Sheriff Bill Hollenbeck says the shooting happened early Thursday at a home at the intersection of U.S. 71 and Arkansas 10. Hollenbeck says a Sebastian County deputy and a Greenwood police officer found a man holding a knife to his mother's chest when they arrived at about 4 a.m.

Hollenbeck tells Fort Smith television station KHBS (http://bit.ly/12j4lxP ) that the deputy shot the man once in the shoulder. The man was then taken to hospital, where he is under the supervision of a guard.

Authorities say the deputy and police officer have been placed on administrative leave pending the results of an internal investigation.
