Riverside Drive Open After Fatal Car Crash And Fire

Posted: Updated:
Tulsa -

A driver is dead after their car hit a tree then caught on fire Thursday morning.

Tulsa Police and Fire responded to the accident at 36th Place and Riverside Drive around 2:45 a.m.  When TPD arrived, the SUV was fully engulfed.  TFD was able to extinguish the fire, but had a hard time keeping it down because the gas causes it to re ignite.

Authorities say they are unsure if other people were inside the vehicle besides the driver.  They are still trying to identify the body, which was extensively burned.  Investigators hope the car tags will help with the identification.

Officials do not think anyone else was involved in the accident.  But, the wet conditions could have been a factor.

TPD closed Riverside Drive from 31st to 41st until the investigation is completed.  They hope to have it reopened before rush hour, but do not think that will happen because of the heavy amount of damage.
