Popular Russellville restaurant pays tax, reopens

RUSSELLVILLE (AP) - A long-time popular restaurant in Russellville has reopened after paying back sales taxes.

The Old South Restaurant reopened Friday after being closed Monday for owing what a state official said was more than $32,000 in state and local sales taxes. A restaurant employee who answered a phone call said the business is open and declined further comment.

Arkansas excise tax administrator Tom Atchley told The Courier that the restaurant was notified March 11 of its nonpayment of sales taxes and that a lien was filed against the company. Atchley says the process of closing a business begins when a business owes three months of sales taxes within a 2-year period.

The restaurant opened April 4, 1947 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in September 1999.
