Memorial placed for woman killed at Ark. rest stop

Posted: Updated:

VAN BUREN, Ark. (AP) - Dozens of friends, family members and co-workers have paid tribute to an Arkansas highway department worker who was shot dead at an Interstate 40 welcome center in Crawford County.

Sharren Sue Richards of Rudy was slain on May 1, 2012, and the Wednesday gathering marked the year that had passed since her death.

A plaque was dedicated at a garden that Richards planted at the welcome center, and numerous people recalled her artistic talent and generous spirit.

The Southwest Times Record reports (http://is.gd/0XajKN) Richards was known for stockpiling new coats and shoes to give away, and many other kind acts.

Richards' accused killer, 58-year-old Patricia Hajek-McClure, is in custody awaiting a mental evaluation. Investigators say Richards was fatally shot when she approached the woman's truck at the welcome center.
