1 reactor back online at Arkansas nuclear plant

Posted: Updated:

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Entergy Arkansas says a reactor at Arkansas Nuclear One in Russellville is back online and is producing electricity.

Unit 2 has been offline since March 31, when an employee was killed in an industrial accident in another part of the plant. Wade Walters died when a 550-ton piece of equipment fell on top of him.

Unit 2 was shut down automatically after the fatal accident. Entergy says the reactor came back online at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Officials say the accident happened in a turbine building and that it caused no danger to the public. The plant's second reactor remains idle.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently reviewed the fatal accident. A public meeting is planned for 2 p.m. May 9 for the agency to discuss its findings.
