Family of burglary suspect killed by officer wants investigation

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - The mother of the man shot by police Thursday morning wants someone to investigate what LRPD is reporting.

Thursday morning, 18-year-old Kenzell Hobbs was seen breaking into cars with two others who have since been arrested. Hobbs reportedly resisted arrest and fired his gun at police. An officer fired back, killing him near N. University Avenue.

Kenzell Hobbs' family did not responded to requests for an interview, but told Channel 7 News that they were at the hospital he was taken to but didn't find out he was there until about six hours after his death.

Family members are not making excuses for what Hobbs was reportedly doing that day, but they don't understand why another agency isn't involved in the investigation.

Sgt. Cassandra Davis with the Little Rock Police Department said, "All our officer-involved shootings are investigated by our homicide detectives and our internal affairs division to determine if there were any policy violations."

The family hasn't been allowed to see Hobbs' body. Sgt. Davis said that's because of department protocol - his body is evidence.

"It's unfortunate that they haven't been able to see their loved one but any time we arrive on a crime scene, the officers and detectives are not allowed to turn the body or touch the body until the coroner gets there."

Hobbs was shot at least once in the upper body. The officer involved is on paid administrative leave.

"The only thing that I can report right now is that there was an exchange of gun fire. As far as who shot first and how many rounds were fired by each person, I'm not at liberty to say," Sgt. Davis explained.

Gary Coleman, 21, told police that he was with Hobbs at the time of the shooting. He has been charged with theft by receiving and auto breaking and entering. Roy lee Boles, 18, was charged with the same plus fleeing and theft of a weapon by receiving.

Even though neither man pulled the trigger, both are also charged with murder because, according to Sgt. Davis, whenever someone dies during a crime, anyone involved in that crime can be charged with murder.
