I-49 segment at SW Arkansas to start construction

TEXARKANA, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas highway officials have awarded a $16.1 million contract to build planned Interstate 49 from Doddridge to the Louisiana border, a project that will meet up with work north of Shreveport, La., that's in its final stages.

The Arkansas Highway Commission on Tuesday awarded the bid to build 4.2 miles of highway south from Doddridge. Louisiana is working on its last section of I-49, running from Shreveport north to the Arkansas line.

The highway is planned to connect Kansas City to Lafayette, La., though much work remains. That includes building close to 200 miles of highway between Texarkana and Fort Smith.

The highway is complete in Louisiana between Shreveport and Lafayette.

The Texarkana Gazette reports Arkansas officials say the segment in the state's southwest will help commerce in Texarkana.
