Child abuse prevention month rally

Posted: Updated:

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. To help raise awareness, the Division of children and Family Services held a rally Monday on the steps of the state capitol.

DCFS director, Cecile Blucker, said child abuse or neglect often takes place in the home by someone the child knows well. She also said it can affect children of every age, race and income level.

"At greater risk are young mothers and fathers unprepared for the responsibilities of raising a child, overwhelmed single parents with little support and families placed under stress by poverty, divorce or a child's disability," said Blucker.

Last year DCFS investigated nearly 36,000 cases of alleged child maltreatment.
