Man arrested for stealing deceased veterans' headstones

A Pine Bluff man is arrested for allegedly vandalizing and stealing the headstones of deceased veterans.

Police say Harold Lawes, 44, was attempting to sell the metal plates on the graves for scrap metal.

Lawes allegedly told the scrap metal dealer he got paid for a job with the veterans' head stones.

That dealer wasn't buying the story and called several cemeteries in the area to check his story.

"Words and feelings cannot describe having been faced with a phone call saying that somebody's grave has been disturbed as a result of somebody going out collecting items from the grave site to try and pawn to support god knows what type of habit," said Maj. Lafayette Woods with Jefferson County Sheriff's Dept.

Many veterans' headstones are made of brass and can be worth up to $2,000.
