First Responder Remembers OKC Bombing, Speaks on Boston Tragedy

Cushing -

Friday marks the 18th anniversary of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City. One of the tragedy's first responders said the Boston Marathon explosions are triggering memories of that day.

"It's just been a really rough week. It just brings it all right back," said Cushing resident Darrel McKnight. He had only been a medic four days when the bombing happened. His crew was responsible for treating children found buried in the rubble. He said none of the ones they found could be saved.

"That's what kind of haunted me over the years, that helpless feeling of not being able to do anything for the babies especially," said McKnight. He and about 200 responders attended a stress briefing clinic in Boston shortly after the tragedy. He eventually quit his job, received a PTSD diagnosis, and became addicted to meth. He said he was self-medicating to help deal with the bombing.

He sought help and has now been clean 831 days as of April 19th. He said he hopes responders to the Boston explosions get the help they need to cope.

I don't think I'll ever have a day free of not thinking about the Oklahoma City bombing," said McKnight.

There was a service for the 18th anniversary of the bombing in Oklahoma City at First United Methodist Church. It was not held at the memorial because the ground was too wet. The service remembered the 168 people that died in the bombing.
