Fighting The Spring Hunger Gap

Posted: Updated:

It may not seem logical, but this time of year is a bad time when it comes to hunger.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says 50-million Americans live in homes that don't have a dependable food supply.

That number includes 16-million children.

Dr. Michelle Borba is an expert on family issues.

She says hunger creates stress and significant problems for children who are growing and trying to learn.

Borba also says the quality of the food is important.

Fresh Fruits and vegetables are a key part of a proper diet.

The Fighting Hunger Together initiative is working to fill the need by donating 30-million meals this spring.

Walmart is partnering with the top food companies to spend $3-million on the project.

Spring has a hunger gap, because food banks are at their lowest level of donations for the year.

You can go to the Walmart web site and vote for your favorite local organization to get some of the food.

You can also find places to volunteer, on that web site.

Borba says that kind of effort, can give children a life lesson in charity and giving back to the community.

If you type in Tulsa, OK, you will have 4 charities to support.

They are the Youth Services of Tulsa, The Tulsa Community Food Bank,

The Oologah Methodist Church and the Agape Mission of Bartlesville.

You can vote on a daily basis.
