A Dollarway school at risk of closure

Posted: Updated:

PINE BLUFF (KATV) - Dollarway School District administrators are looking at closing an elementary school. Altheimer-Martin Elementary school in Altheimer has 78 students, down by 34 students since 2010.

In 2012, the district was taken over by the state. The takeover stems from the district's two years of accreditation probationary status. Fiscal distress takeovers last two years, but are indefinite when it is for accreditation takeovers.

The drop in enrollment cost the school $213,000 in state funding. Because the Dollarway district is under state control, it can get its finances and academics in order. State officials would have to approve the closure.
