ACLU will sue Arkansas over abortion law

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - Members of the American Civil Liberties Union in Little Rock will announce details Tuesday afternoon of a lawsuit which will challenge the state's new 12 week abortion ban.

The new law, known as the "Human Heartbeat Protection Act" restricts abortion of a fetus deemed at least 12 weeks old, unless the pregnancy is due to rape or incest. Physicians authorized to perform abortions can lose their licenses if they don't follow this law.

Family Council President Jerry Cox said he is not surprised by the lawsuit.

"This is what groups like the ACLU do," said Cox. "They try to thwart the will of the people by asking the courts to strike down good laws. The ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and other pro-choice organizations have opposed virtually every pro-life bill introduced in the Arkansas Legislature over the past twenty-five years. I'm not surprised they are against this one too."

The bill, which became Act 301 was sponsored by Republican Senator Jason Rapert, who represents Faulkner and Perry counties.
