Changes Wanted After Dentist Scandal

Posted: Updated:

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Following allegations that a Tulsa-area oral surgeon exposed at least 7,000 patients to hepatitis or the virus that causes AIDS - the head of the Oklahoma Dentistry Board says the agency has just three inspectors to watch over the state's 2,200 dentists.

Susan Rogers also told The Associated Press that a state law prohibits surprise inspections of dental offices and that dentists are depended upon to police themselves.

Rogers says wants more investigators and that she will recommend regular inspections of dental facilities.

Her comments come after Dr. W. Scott Harrington allegedly exposed patients to the diseases. The patients have been urged to be tested and about 2,000 have done so.

Harrington's attorney said in a statement that Harrington's record is "impeccable" and that he is cooperating with investigators.
