Ark. House approves cap on special license plates

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas House has approved legislation that would limit how many types of special license plates the state can issue.

By a 78-6 vote, lawmakers passed legislation that would cap the number of specialty plates starting next year. The bill would also require the state to stop issuing a type of special license plates if they have fewer than 500 users.

A variety of groups use the specialty plates to raise money for specific causes. Lawmakers this session have proposed or approved the creation of at least 20 new special license plates.

The plates approved this session are to support and honor an assortment of groups, from the state's nurses association to the Arkansas Rice Council to the Arkansas Tennis Association.
