Rutgers coach fired over practice video

Posted: Updated:

NEW BRUSWICK, N.J. (ABC) - Rutgers' Basketball Coach Matt Rice is now out of a job following a firestorm from the release of a video showing him abusing his players during practices.

Eric Murdock, who was Rice's director of player development until he was fired, showed it to Rutgers' athletic department officials before ESPN got a hold of it. The video experts of basketball practices showed Rice shoving, grabbing and throwing balls at players, and using anti-gay slurs.

"At sometime maybe, I'll try to explain it," said Rice, "but right now, there's no explanation for what's on that film because there is no excuse for it. I was wrong."

The school's athletic director let Rice keep his job after seeing the tape in late November but now that the tape has been made public, the school fired Rice.
