JONESBORO (KAIT) - Now that winter is over, parents may want to throw away all their cold medicine left over from flu season.
One Arkansas doctor said teens are abusing medications like cough syrup that have the ingredient known as DXM. Dr. Shane Speight even suggested the risk of using the cold medicine is higher than the benefit.
"Do 10-year-olds really need it? Do 12- or 15-year-olds? Do 17-year-olds need it? At the end of the day, a lot of these symptoms are just viral symptoms. They will go away on their own in a few days anyway whether you treat it or not."
While drinking cough syrup for an instant high is not a new practice for teens, the increased access to over-the-counter medicine made it more common.
