Ark. Chamber of Commerce backs insurance expansion

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce is backing a proposal to expand health insurance to thousands of low-income residents by purchasing private coverage with federal Medicaid funds.

The state chamber on Thursday announced its support for the proposal lawmakers are considering to use federal funds to purchase private insurance for low-income residents newly eligible for Medicaid under the federal health care law. The proposal is being considered as an alternative to the Medicaid expansion under the federal health overhaul.

The chamber said it was supporting the proposal because it believed the plan would ultimately lower health care costs by increasing enrollment in the private insurance market and encouraging competition.
