UPDATE: Ark. House delays override try on voter ID bill

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The House is delaying an attempt to override Gov. Mike Beebe's veto of legislation that would require voters to show photo identification at the polls.

Republican Rep. Stephen Meeks of Greenbrier says he won't ask the House to override Beebe's veto Thursday, as originally expected.

Meeks says he'll likely seek an override Monday or Tuesday.

Meeks says the delay was not an indication that Republicans don't have the votes for an override. He says he decided against the vote because the House was expected to have a long afternoon of votes on other matters Thursday.

The state Senate voted 21-12 to override on Wednesday.

It takes a simple majority in both chambers of the Legislature to override a governor's veto. Republicans control the House and Senate.
