Would You Shop Around for the Cheapest Medical Care?

Posted: Updated:

A new Tulsa-based start-up company is aiming to save people money by letting them compare prices for medical care.

"Health care's expensive, it doesn't have to be," said Matt Scovil of Medefy, defying the costs of health care by demystifying it.

"You know the price of a gallon of gas, you know how much a loaf of bread costs, right, there's no reason why you can't know what an MRI costs or how much a checkups going to cost, or a hip surgery's going to cost," he said.

Which is what Medefy will do; allow you to comparison price for various medical needs.

"When we first got this idea we were like, 'Wow, there's a huge need for this,'" said Nathan Gilchrist.

Self-insured companies for example, could use it in conjunction with their own network of providers to see who has the best rates.

"The program incentivizes employees to choose lower cost, higher quality care, which saves the employee money and it saves the company money," said Scovil.

Part of the challenge? Getting across the message that cheaper doesn't mean lesser quality, it just means less expensive.

"You know a doctor that charges a $1,000 for an MRI is going to be exactly the same, usually, exactly the same as one that charges $400, $500, $600 dollars," said Gilchrist.

And yet, when it comes to medicine, by and large, people just buy blindly.

"Nobody buys a car without knowing how much it costs, nobody buys a house, nobody buys anything expensive without knowing the cost first. Medicine we make an exception for, I don't know why," said Scovil.

Before Medefy can work for you, it has to work on itself. They're hoping to come out with a beta version by the end of the year, and by 2014, be helping folks take the headaches out of health care costs.

"It doesn't have to be that way, and we figured out a way so that it doesn't, and its as easy as shopping for a pair of shoes online," said Scovil.

Medefy is looking for companies to participate in their early development stages, to see how the program could work and save your business money. Contact Matt and Nathan by clicking on the Medefy link.
