Ark. Senate panel advances six constitutional amendments

Posted:

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - A Senate panel has advanced six proposed constitutional amendments for lawmakers to consider putting on the Arkansas ballot next year.

The Senate State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee on Tuesday referred the six amendments to be taken up when the panel meets jointly with a House committee. The Legislature can refer three amendments to voters for the general election.

The measures include a proposal to require voters to show photo identification when casting a ballot, mirroring a bill that lawmakers backed and Gov. Mike Beebe vetoed Monday. Another proposal would give the Legislature the authority to supersede the rules of pleadings, procedure and evidence for courts.

Other proposals advanced include one requiring the state Game and Fish commissioners be elected and another creating a nine-person legislative redistricting commission.
