JONESBORO (KAIT) - Arkansas State University freshmen will be required to bring an iPad to school next Fall.
Those iPads can cost anywhere from $330 - 500 depending on the model. Students will be able to rent the iPads from the university.
Administrators said while the cost may be a hurdle for some students, the school adopted the plan after deciding that having electronic books could save students in the long run. They also hope the iPad will help students connect with curriculum outside the classroom and, in turn, boos the number of students who graduate.
"We found that in the classroom, if they have a device which they can be more involved in the learning in the way that they're used to, it makes them so much more in tune," said Dr. Jill Simons, executive director of University College.
The decision makes ASU the first public university in the state to require a computer or tablet.
