Fort Smith library absorbs cafe costs for ambiance

Posted: Updated:

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - There is more than a healthy selection of books inspires people to use their local library.

At the Fort Smith Public Library, organizers are absorbing a loss of more than $10,000 per year to keep open a cafe that helps draw in patrons.

Organizers say no public money is involved in subsidizing the cafe because the library has an endowment that's used to fund the eatery.

Dewey's Cafe opened in 2010 and library officials say they hope it generates more revenue in the time ahead. For now, the Southwest Times Record reports (http://is.gd/fqGIsj ) the cafe's net loss averages $29 per day, which library trustee Ben Shipley says is a fair price for what the cafe adds to the library experience.
