Victory Christian Case: Daughtery's Make Plea in Court

AP/Staff Reports

Two employees of a Tulsa megachurch accused of waiting for two weeks before reporting the rape of a 13-year-old girl on ministry property last summer have pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge.

Victory Christian Center's John and Charica Daughtery pleaded no contest Friday to failing to promptly to report child abuse. The Daughertys are the son and daughter-in-law of the south Tulsa church's senior pastor.

The judge handed down a five year deferred sentence, meaning the court will keep an eye on them during that time. The judge also mandated that the couple write a report regarding child abuse reporting practices for Victory. They will then each have to make presentations at 20 different facilities that deal with youth.

The Daughertys' lawyer, Jason Robertson, said the couple is "ready for the healing process to begin." He said at the end of the couple's probation, this will likely not be on their record.

Victory Christian Center issued this statement: "We respect the judge’s decision and sincerely hope that today will serve as another part of the ongoing healing process."

Three of the Daughertys' co-workers pleaded no contest on Monday to the same charges. Paul Willemstein and Anna George were sentenced to 30 days in jail. Harold "Frank" Sullivan was given a one year suspended sentence with no jail time.

"You have lower level employees who go to the Tulsa County Jail for 30 days and their bosses don't," said District Attorney Tim Harris. He said he hopes the community learns more about protecting children after this case.
