Ryan's Run Fundraiser More Important In Wake Of Federal Cuts

Posted: Updated:

A little boy's death sparked a movement to raise money for kids in crisis, and with recent federal budget cuts, that fundraiser is more important than ever.

Organizers with Ryan's Run stopped by KTUL's Good Morning Oklahoma Thursday to talk about the event which benefits the Pittsburg County Child Advocacy Center.

Board president Joe Brawley said the 5K and Fun Run event are named for Ryan Luke. Back in 1995, the 2-year-old was taken from DHS custody and put back into an abuse home, where he later died.

"We decided in Pittsburg County to never let that happen again," Brawley said. "We decided to start Ryan's Run as a fundraiser and to raise awareness about child abuse in our community and the state of Oklahoma."

Luke's case brought about a new set of laws which paved the way for child advocacy centers in all Oklahoma.

This is the 18th event, and Brawly said this year's fundraiser takes an even more important role since the March sequester took away some federal funding.

There's still plenty of time to register for the event, which takes place Saturday, April 6th in McAlester. It is officially sanctioned and certified by USATF.

Registration is $15 until April 2nd. The price increases to $25 and entries can be made on race day.
