Nearly 34K fans attend Oaklawn's Rebel Stakes

Posted: Updated:

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - Oaklawn Park says sunny skies and a major stakes race made for a good day for the track at last weekend's Rebel Stakes.

Oaklawn says it posted its largest handle since 2005 on a non-Arkansas Derby day with $7.8 million combined in on- and off-track betting.

Oaklawn's David Longinotti says nearly 34,000 fans visited the track for Saturday's Rebel Stakes. The 3-day weekend total was more than 50,000 people.

Will Take Charge won the Rebel with Oxbow coming in second. Both are in the mix for the Kentucky Derby.

The racetrack says the race drew fans from around Arkansas and out of state.

George Downie, the airport manager at Hot Springs Memorial Field, tells the Sentinel-Record (http://is.gd/kGjk4g ) that planes were stacked "tail-to-tail" as visitors flew in for the horse race.
