Example of a power arrestor
A major power outage sweeps portions of southeast Tulsa, Broken Arrow and Coweta early Friday.
About 13,000 PSO customers lost service around 3:30am. The company said a piece of equipment failed at its 81st and Garnett substation. Electricity was restored around 5:00am.
Company spokesman Stan Whiteford said a lighting arrester failed and caused extra load on a transmission line. The failure caused the line to arc which created a bright flash that folks around the area saw.
Whiteford explained that the arrester can fail sometimes weeks or months following a strike. There were no electric storms in the area Friday morning.
