South Conway County School District may have to cut stipends, positions, programs

MORRILTON (Petit Jean Country Headlight) - The South Conway County School District is considering a number of cost-saving measures in response to recent federal and state budget cuts.

The Board of Education on Monday reviewed several practices the district may implement next school year to save money. Superintendent Dr. Annette Henderson said the district is being proactive in making up for a shortfall in state aid funding.

"We took a pretty good hit this year and budgeted accordingly, she said. "But we want to make sure that we have a pretty good cushion in the event that something happens and we're just trying to implement very sound fiscal practices."

Among the measures being considered are the elimination of retirement and non-essential district-funded stipends, the energy manager position, the district-funded ABC program and the River Valley Technical Center's construction technology program.

Other practices being reviewed are the consolidation of certain bus routes, certain teaching positions and the alternative learning environment for the seventh- through 12th grades.

District leaders are also recommending no busses be purchased for the 2013-14 school year. Typically, the district replaces two or three busses each year.

The board tabled any action on the cost-saving measures until next month and will determine then which changes should be implemented.
