Senate committee passes ban on semi-automatic guns

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved an assault weapons ban.

It would ban 150 specifically named military-style weapons, rifles and handguns. It would also prohibit the sale of semi-automatic guns that have detachable magazines over 10 rounds, plus military-assault weapons that have flash suppressors or pistol grips.

It was a 10 to 8 party line vote. Even supporters admit there is an uphill battle for it to pass the full senate.

The bill's sponsor Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) faces overwhelming GOP opposition and likely defections by up to six moderate democrats facing re-election next year in republican-leaning states in the south and west.

You may remember an assault rifle was used by the man who killed 26 elementary school students and staff in Newtown, Conn., in December.

Banning the weapons is key to President Barack Obama's plan to curb gun violence.
