LITTLE ROCK (AP) - A House panel is reviewing whether a bill requiring Arkansas voters to show photo identification requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the Legislature to be approved.
The House Rules Committee on Wednesday plans to discuss whether the voter ID bill must meet the "supermajority" required in a state constitutional amendment regarding changes to the state's voter registration system. The Senate approved the requirement on a 23-12 vote, one vote shy of a two-thirds majority.
The measure would require voters to show photo identification before they cast a ballot. Poll workers are currently required to ask for identification, but voters are not required to show it. Opponents of the measure argue the proposal changes the voter registration requirements laid out in the constitution.
