ORIGINAL STORY:
SHERWOOD (KATV) - A three-year-old boy struck by a vehicle in Sherwood died just after midnight Wednesday.
Captain Kel Nicholson with the Sherwood Police Department told KATV Wednesday morning they are now focused on looking for a red SUV and the driver who fled the scene after hitting Jaylen Diggs at Park Crest Apartments off Manson Road around 7:00 Monday night.
The complex is gated and has a good reputation with Sherwood officers.
"You can walk through there and there will be a lot of children come up and talk to you," said Officer Richard Harper. "That's one of the things I like about patrolling that area."
Investigators' main obstacle so far has been that most of the witnesses were children - no parents were present at the time. Officer Harper said there's a small playground but it's not unusual for the kids to run on the sidewalk or parking lot.
Sherwood police have asked that the driver come forward.
Detectives said there's a chance the red vehicle doesn't have any noticeable damage from hitting the toddler.
