AR Board Of Education votes to close Weiner High School

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - Community members turned out by the dozens Monday to save Weiner High School but in the end, it wasn't enough.

The Arkansas Board of Education voted to close the campus. Some supporters, though, say it's not over yet.

Michelle Cadle told her 12 year old son, "Look at me. 7th grade. You're a cardinal."

The Weiner School District was annexed into the Harrisburg District under Act 60 in 2010 when enrollment fell below 350 students. Monday, the state Board of Education decided to close it outright.

Harrisburg Superintendent Danny Sample said, "The enrollment at the Weiner campus in the last three years has decreased by about 22 percent, or 37 students. We do not want to be visionary to where we continue to lose students, continue to lose dollars and we jeopardize the diversity of educational excellence."

After hearing from Harrisburg Superintendent Danny Sample, the Board's vote was 5 to 2 in favor of the merger - a move that brought some to tears.

Andrew Cadle, Michelle Cadle's son, said "That's my home. That's where I grew up. Just wanted to grow up there and graduate from Weiner High School."

Supporters said they plan to fight the decision through a bill filed Friday by State Representative Randy Alexander, which would put a moratorium on any closings or consolidations for two years.

Rep. Alexander said, "We need to call a time out and take some significant time and look at this and evaluate what it is we've done here. With the education problems we have in the state, we don't need to be closing schools that are successful and that are financially stable."

Monday's vote came just two days after the Weiner girls basketball team finished as runners-up in the 1A state championship.
