(KATV) Little Rock - The Dunbar Community Garden has been in the 1800 block of South Chester for 20-years. But because of a lack of funding, they could run out of money by the end of the year.

The garden is a non-profit. They are able to have someone on staff because of money from the city. However, the city of Little Rock has denied them more money this year and grants they were planning for didn't come through. Now they're looking to the community for support.

The Dunbar Community Garden is an outdoor classroom. Kids and adults alike can feed and learn about how to take care of the animals... plant and nurture fruits and vegetables. The founders strategically placed the two acre garden between Dunbar Middle School and Gibbs Magnet Elementary.

Dondi Nelsen is the Dunbar Community Garden board president. She says, "Over 20-years, it has evolved to a huge educational garden, a market garden that produces food we sell to local restaurants."

The garden is run solely by volunteers and donations. Individuals and organizations can have their own plot. For example the Canvas Community grows food here to feed the homeless.

The Dunbar Community Garden is also a partner with the city. Nelson says most people who come out to do community service, return on their own as volunteers.

It's also a place that keeps kids out of trouble. She explains, "It's somewhere they come and it's kind of a safe haven oasis for a lot of kids in the inner city."

Students come out here for science class, volunteers teach a garden curriculum and there's an after school program. But the lack of funding has lead to a campaign, asking the community for help, or else... "We won't close completely, but it won't thrive."

It's not just about money; they need equipment donations and would love to have more volunteers.
