NEWPORT (AP) - Authorities say a man died after suffering cardiac arrest when he was brought in for questioning at the Jackson County jail.
Sheriff David Lucas says 37-year-old James Alfred Elliott III was brought to the jail to be interviewed in connection with the Feb. 19 shooting of Rosemary Hernandez in Newark.
Lucas says Elliott was booked in the jail at 11:51 p.m. Tuesday on an investigative hold for the Independence County Sheriff's Office. The Batesville Daily Guard reports that Elliott was discovered in cardiac arrest at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Jail personnel administered CPR and Elliott was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:20 a.m.
Lucas says the death remains under investigation. Elliott's body will be sent to the Arkansas Crime Laboratory for an autopsy.
