Animal Rights Group Pushing For Horse Slaughter Ban

Posted: Updated:

An animal rights group is requesting a ban on horse slaughtering in Oklahoma.

Members of the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign are meeting with the Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Committee from the federal Bureau of Land Management.

The animal rights group is asking for a halt to federal wild horse roundups, an end to the government's policy of selling wild horses for as little as $10 a piece and an outright ban on horse slaughter.

The group says almost 22,000 captured wild horses are held in Oklahoma, which is on a path to legalize horse slaughter.  Legislation that would authorize the operation of horse slaughter plants in the state have been passed by the House and Senate.
