Youthful drivers to be prom-time LR police target

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Police are about to start periods of strict enforcement for drunken drivers, especially the younger ones.

The first stepped-up enforcement event runs Friday through March 17, and the second is April 12-21.

The department says those times coincide with proms and graduation ceremonies, when young revelers may be more likely to get behind the wheel while impaired.

The agency says TV and radio ads will reinforce a message of 0 tolerance for drunken driving by people under 21.

The limit for drunken driving in Arkansas is a blood-alcohol content of .08% or higher, but for drivers under 21, the limit is .02% or above, a much stricter standard.

Also, police will be enforcing the legal drinking age of 21.
