Ark. governor signs whistleblower reward bill

Posted:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas state employees who expose government waste and inefficiencies that lead to savings for the state will be entitled to a reward starting later this year.

Gov. Mike Beebe on Friday signed into law a bill changing the state's whistleblower statute to include a reward for reporting fraud and abuse in government.

A state employee whose report leads to savings for the state will be entitled to 10% of those savings, though the Legislature will have to approve awards larger than $12,500.

Supporters of the proposal say it's needed to deter inefficiency in state government while some lawmakers questioned whether it is necessary.

The law takes effect 90 days after the Legislature adjourns, which will likely be in March or April.
