Benton cop arrested for DWI

Posted: Updated:

BRYANT (KATV) - A Benton police officer was arrested in Bryant February 9, accused of driving while intoxicated.

Heath Ward, 32, drove close to 20 mph over the speed limit in the area of the North Service Road along Highway 183 near Interstate 30 and crossed several lanes of traffic without signaling more than once, according to a police report. When he was pulled over, an officer said that he could smell alcohol on Ward's breath.

Ward originally denied drinking, but later reportedly admitted to it. When the Bryant officer asked Ward if he would be willing to take a field sobriety tests, he reportedly replied that he was a Benton officer and, "You can get me fired if you want to." He eventually failed three tests, including a breathalyzer, according to the arrest report.

Lt. Scott Courtney with the Saline County Sheriff's Office told Channel 7 News records show Ward was never booked in the county jail, but Lt. Kevin Russell with Benton Police confirmed that Ofc. Ward was immediately placed on administrative leave. He was fired when Benton PD's internal investigation was finished February 15.
