Arkansas lawmakers to vote on scholarships, guns

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas lawmakers returning to the Capitol for the seventh week of this year's legislative session are expected to consider gun issues and changes to the state's lottery scholarship program.

The Senate is scheduled to vote Monday on a bill allowing faculty and staff to carry concealed handguns on college campuses. Gov. Mike Beebe has said he'll likely sign the measure, which allows universities to opt out.

They're also to vote on changes to the lottery scholarship program. The bill has already passed the House and would create a tiered structure of awards that starts at $2,000 for freshmen at 4-year colleges. The award would then increase by $1,000 each year to a maximum of $5,000 for seniors.

House lawmakers will likely take up a Senate-passed voter ID bill this week.
