Over the years, I can't tell you how many times I've questioned a coach's decision.
I had one of those moments early in last night's 62-60 win over Georgia. It came early in the first half when freshman Anthlon Bell popped off the bench to enter the game.
What was Mike Anderson thinking?
Anthlon Bell hadn't scored a point in seven games. We're talking about a freshman who didn't even get in the game against Missouri and Vanderbilt. There was nothing on his freshman resume that would make him good 6th man material.
It's a move that may have saved the season.
A loss at home to a very average Georgia team would have ended any dreams the Hogs had of dancing in March. It would have also put an end to an impressive February run that has seen this young Razorback team win five out of six.
BJ Young earned hero status again with a seemingly low percentage journey to the hoop. He beat the odds again.
Most college players are lucky to hit one game winning shot in their career. BJ has now hit two in two games. Few players in college basketball can finish like BJ Young.
Marshawn Powell also came up big late. Georgia had just seized the momentum - and the lead - when Marshawn rose and fired, and... swish. It tied the game at 56. The foul-plagued forward made the most of his 15 minutes on the floor, scoring 11 points.
Young and Powell made big plays but this game was more about the other guys on the team. Anthlon Bell poured in a game high 17 points. Coty Clarke had 8 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Rickey Scott had 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Micheal Qualls had 5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots. This may shock you, but Madracus Wade actually led the team with 6 rebounds.
Then there's Kikko. Only two Hogs - BJ Young and Qualls - logged more minutes last night than this walk-on wonder. It was a typical Kikko game. How about this line - 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 4 fouls and one big three pointer. He is more than an energy guy; Kikko has become a game changing force.
If the other guys didn't deliver last night, there would have been no late-game heroics from Powell or Young. Marshawn and BJ combined for only 19 points and the Hogs won.
It wasn't pretty but the Hogs got it done, thanks in large part to the play of Anthlon Bell and the other guys.
